Dada's Story, Rajkummar's Role: The Sourav Ganguly Biopic Takes Shape! Wed June 25th, 2025

The highly anticipated biopic on the life of cricketing legend Sourav Ganguly finally has its leading man. After months of speculation and a flurry of rumors, acclaimed actor Rajkummar Rao has officially confirmed that he will be stepping into the shoes of the former Indian cricket captain. Rao himself broke the silence in a recent interview, acknowledging the immense responsibility of portraying "Dada" on the big screen.

For a considerable period, the casting for the Sourav Ganguly biopic had been a hot topic, with names like Ranbir Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana also being linked to the project. However, Ganguly himself had recently hinted at Rao's involvement, setting the stage for the official announcement.

In an exclusive interview, Rajkummar Rao stated, "Now that Dada has already said it, let me also make it official – yes, I am playing him in his biopic." The National Award-winning actor admitted to feeling "extremely nervous" about taking on such an iconic role but also expressed immense excitement for the challenge ahead. "It's a huge responsibility, but it's going to be a lot of fun," he added.

Rao's dedication to his craft is well-known, and his commitment to an authentic portrayal of Ganguly is already evident. He revealed that he has been honing his Bengali speaking skills, a language he has picked up over the years thanks to his wife, actor Patralekhaa, who is Bengali. This attention to detail promises to bring an added layer of authenticity to the character.

Sourav Ganguly, one of India's most successful cricket captains, has openly endorsed Rao's casting. "I think the right person is doing it. I'll help him with everything," Ganguly stated, expressing his confidence in Rao's abilities to bring his life story to the screen.

The former skipper, who represented India from 1992 to 2008, also provided an update on the film's production. He confirmed that the shooting is slated to begin in January 2026, with a theatrical release targeted for December 2026. Ganguly emphasized that the pre-production, including story writing and scripting, takes a significant amount of time, while the actual shooting period will be around three months.

This biopic, which is yet to be officially titled, will delve into Ganguly's incredible journey, from his early days in Kolkata to becoming a pivotal figure in Indian cricket. It is expected to cover his on-field triumphs, his transformative leadership, and the various challenges he faced throughout his illustrious career. While the director and other cast members are yet to be officially announced, industry reports suggest that Vikramaditya Motwane, who previously collaborated with Rao on 'Trapped,' might be at the helm.

Rajkummar Rao has a strong track record of portraying real-life characters with depth and conviction, with acclaimed performances in films like 'Shahid,' 'Omerta,' and most recently, 'Srikanth.' His casting as Sourav Ganguly has undoubtedly heightened anticipation among both cricket enthusiasts and cinema lovers, promising a compelling cinematic experience that will chronicle the life of one of India's most beloved sporting icons.
